Metronidazole - Metrogel, Metrocream, Metrolotion, Rozex & Noritate for Rosacea

The History of Metronidazole from a vaginal yeast product to a Rosacea Product.

Rhone-Poulenc Laboratories patented Metronidazole under the trade name of Flagyl for parasitic vaginal yeast in 1955. Later in 1962, Rhone-Poulenc Labs placed Flagyl on the market for those paients with trichomonad vaginitis. Metronidazole has been very useful for many women as a vaginal yeast product since 1962.

Most rosacea patients have not had the same good results as the women with vaginitis. A few found a small improvement after two weeks but subsided. However, most patients found no improvement after using metronidazole topically with the product names of Metrogel, Metrocream, Metrolotion, Rozex & Noritate after months or years. Most patients have continued to use Metrogel, Metrocream, Metrolotion, Rozex & Noritate for the 'fear of their rosacea getting worse' as they have heard from their dermatologist or read from various publications that rosacea is a 'progressive skin disorder' which is not true. The primary disadvantage of Metronidazole is the carcinogen nature to grow tumors in mice, and teratology activity (abnormal physiological development such as birth defects and alcohol interactions).

The combination of metronidazole and consumption of alcohol can cause nausea, flushing or redness of the skin, shortness of breath, advanced heart rate, and potential death. Alcohol should be avoided due to the great potential for skin tissue penetration and absorption. Likewise pregnancy and breast feeding should be avoided while the patient is using metronidazole or Metrogel, Metrocream, Metrolotion & Noritate for Rosacea.
