We’ve all experienced it, dry, itchy, scaly flaking patches of skin. Or skin so dry that when you scratch your skin, you leave white marks on the surface of your skin. It seems almost anything and everything can dry your skin: the sun dries your skin, a warm hot shower can dry your skin, the soap you bathe with, the detergent you wash your clothes with, even the material in the clothes you wear have the ability to cause dry skin. Lotion, potions and creams applied to the skin and hairspray, styling gel and hair mousse can all cause dry skin. Foods don’t actually dry out the skin but beverages that act as diuretics such as coffee, teas, diet sodas and alcohol can dehydrate the body and thus contribute to dry skin. Even medications can have a drying effect on the skin. When the label says ‘take with plenty of water’ they really mean it. Not swallow with a sip of water but at least one to two glasses of water.

So what’s the solution? Hydration, hydration, and more hydration. On the surface of the skin, hydrate with pure essential oils applied to the skin after bathing while the skin is still damp. Be careful to avoid anti-aging or anti-wrinkle products which act as an exfoliate and can have the opposite effect and cause more skin dryness. Hydrate the skin from within with the moisturizing, nourishing effects of pure water. The body’s largest organ is the skin so when the body is dehydrated, the skin will be the first to show the effects of dehydration. So do your skin a favor and create that healthy glow with a tall glass of water.
