Lamellar Dyshidrosisalso known as Keratolysis Exfoliativa. A harmless condition of the skin, often misdiagnosed as chronic contact dermatitis or psoriasis. It primarily appears on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet. The symptoms are characterized by dry skin and air-filled blisters. The blisters peel off easily, leaving reddish, tender areas.

Lanacort® – Hydrocortisone – a natural chemical made by the body which reduces swelling, itching, inflammation and burning. The most common prescribed and/or over-the-counter steroid medication used for the treatment of itching and inflammation associated with a wide variety of skin conditions such as eczema, allergic skin conditions, dermatitis, and seborrheic dermatitis. Very low potency steroid. Also sold under the brand names: Cetacort®, Nutracort®, Anusol-HC®, Hytone®, Cort-Dome®, Cortenema®, Cortifoam®, Cortaind®, Locoid®, Westcort®.

Laser surgery – a type of surgery that uses special light beams instead of instruments for surgical procedures. (The word “laser” stands for “Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation”).

Lesions – a wound or injury to the skin.

Lichenification – thickening upper layers of the skin in response to trauma(thickening of the skin due to itching or rubbing). Commonly occurs in atopic dermatitis.

Lichen Planus – a common skin disease resulting in purple or reddish-purple bumps that may be itchy or contain a fine scale. Lichen planus may occur on the skin, mouth, scalp, genitals, or nails.

Lichen simplex chronicus – occurs because of repeated scratching, may appear as small and flat areas (plaques) of various sizes, 1 to 10 inches (2.5 to 25 centimeters) in diameter. These areas have definite margins that have become thick and leatherlike (lichenified). This type of eczema is also known as neurodermatitis can occur when something such as a tight garment rubs or scratches your skin. This irritation may lead you to rub or scratch your skin repeatedly. Common locations include ankles, wrist, outer forearm or arm, and the back of your neck.

Licon – (Fluocinonide), a high potency corticosteroid medication used for the treatment of inflammation caused by a number of conditions such as allergic reactions, eczema, and psoriasis. Also sold under the brand names: Fluonex®, Dermacin, Fluex, Lidex, Lidex-E.

Lidex® – By Medicis, (Fluocinonide), a high potency corticosteroid medication used for the treatment of inflammation caused by a number of conditions such as allergic reactions, eczema, and psoriasis. Also sold under the brand names: Fluonex®, Dermacin, Fluex, Licon, Lidex, Lidex-E.

Light Sensitive Eczema – eczema caused by exposure to sunlight.

Locoid® – (Ferndale), – Hydrocortisone – a natural chemical made by the body which reduces swelling, itching, inflammation and burning. The most common prescribed and/or over the counter steroid used for the treatment of itching and inflammation associated with a wide variety of skin conditions such as eczema, allergic skin conditions, dermatitis, and seborrheic dermatitis. Lotrisone® – by Schering, (Clotrimazole, Betamethasone dipropionate), cream and lotion contain a combination of a steroid (betamethasone) and an antifungal drug (clotrimazole). It is used in the treatment of skin infections caused by fungus, such as athlete’s foot, jock itch, and ringworm of the body.

Lupus – an autoimmune disease,facial symptoms include a butterfly rash along the cheeks, sometimes confused with rosacea or psoriasis. The symptoms of lupus include chest pain, hair loss, anemia (a decrease in red blood cells), mouth ulcers, and pale or purple fingers and toes from cold and stress. Some people also experience headaches, dizziness, depression, confusion, or seizures.
